CURATORIAL PROJECT: Space Between

One of the first assignments in my MA was to make some work from the contents of my bag. The objective was to dramatise my belongings, to look at the contents as a portrait of what to expect my day to be. There was only a few hours to complete the task and to curate the results in the project space along with my other peers.

The two objects that I began to gravitate towards was the lipstick, and then the plasters. I began with the idea that lipstick could portray in some way the difficulty of being in a pandemic. Wearing lipstick behind a mask does not work, not only because it can not be seen but because it would rub off into the mask. But I began to gravitate towards the plasters as it became clear that I had a lot in my bag, and what this could imply.

I used the plasters as a way of mending the tissue that got torn as I wiped off the lipstick, then focused on the box of plasters itself. The project opened up to a short venture outside of the space we were working in to build on the ideas and I chose to buy 2 more boxes of plasters. One clear and one fabric. Simply focusing on the materiality of the plasters, the plaster wrappings and the boxes was the way I moved forward.
