CURATORIAL PROJECT: Relative Limits
Given the title 'Relative Limits' to work with, this was an exercise in developing curatorial skills and to come together with a body of work in collaboration with 3 other artists. The intention was to bring together a show, that encouraged a conversation between each artists response to 'Relative Limits'. It was a rewarding outcome and highlighted a good connection between the works, partly helped by the common title. What came across clearly though, was the focus in each of our works of two opposing perspectives, ie limits, one of the wider view, the cosmos and the other, the personal view.
This is the section of the Press Release that I entered for the group show.
2 meter ruler, 2020, animation
Limits such as the the 6 person rule, the 4 week lockdown period, the time slot to view an event, the outside only social encounters and the 2 meter social distance rule are measurements relative to our current circumstances. These limits are in perpetual flux, moving within the boundaries of the absolute.
Within the framework of a 2 meter ruled line, captured images of an object explore this now familiar space at regular intervals of distance and time. Encompassing the straight line and the loop, light and shadow, methods of measurements are demonstrated through play with found objects. Applying repetition through animation, the fixed points are set into motion. This work focuses on Newtonian thought, where it is suggested that a “frame of reference” is a standard relative to which motion and rest may be measured.
