T-IMPRINT SERIES #2

CIRCUMPLECTOR

This body of work focuses on a collection of marks and objects centred around the rituals of daily tea drinking. Recorded over a period of one year, the first tea made and consumed became a marker for the date and time the days work in the studio began. Interest in the mundane and the throw away are central to this inquiry. The potential to elevate the material alters expected outcomes and grants permission for what was once to be discarded worthy of presentation.

Circumplector #1 (2020), tea bags, pins, paint, pen on foam board, 123 x 63 cm

Circumplector #3 (2020), stop motion film, duration: 01:03

Circumplector #3 takes the form of a stop motion film which has emerged as a consequence of making Circumplector #1. The traces of spray paint leave a ghostly shape and reflect the process undertaken for each used tea bag as it is prepared for Circumplector #1. A collection of traces come together from the remains to form a central white shape, cast within a black void. Set with the sounds that reflect the ceremonial habits of tea making the white shape seems to dance like the reflection of light on water.

Tea Dance (2018), stop motion film, duration: 04:47

Tea Dance (2018) combines the rituals of tea making with music. It evokes a sensation of dance and alludes to historical references relating to a traditional social event which combines dance with tea and cake.
