PROJECT PROPOSAL: Concept of Current work

Photography is an essential technical process in the practice and is used for recording and collecting data. Repetition and accumulation of image provides the material for a stop-motion film. The work will investigate the media of film by arranging the collection of material to create a sequence that looks at intervals, sound, rhythm and disruption.

Screen prints ready for traces to be applied

The work will also explore the media of screen printing as a means to shift the photographic image of empty fields into a format that investigates traditional processes of making. The print will be the backdrop which provides a space for mark making. Traces of found nails will consider placement and pattern within a dialogue between intention and chance. Defiling an otherwise perceived empty landscape, the work seeks to define notions of emptiness and acts of looking from both a human and non-human point of view.

Scale is an essential consideration. Investigating differences between large projections of image with small projections, seeks to establish whether the viewer is ‘in the landscape’ or removed and looking in. This exploration utilises technical processes of photography and projection, using dimensions of space and distance to define scale. Whether on a flat wall, the three sides of a room or a small box, the differences in scale and the alteration of viewer as mark maker in place of the drawn trace are yet to be resolved.

Experimental work - chalk drawing with projected image

The stop-motion film and large projection should be seen in an enclosed area with the potential to immerse the viewer in the work. The screen prints and the smaller projection act like a window into another dimension. The viewer is separated by scale and the work should be positioned so that the viewer can look into the space.
