SHOW: Coming up for Air

JAMES HOCKEY GALLERY, UCA, FARNHAM

This exhibition is on view from today (1st November) until the 18th November, to coincide with the UN summit on climate change (COP26) in Glasgow and the COP26 Green Zone Event in Farnham Town Centre themed ‘Decarbonisation of Transport in a Rural County’. BA and MA Fine Art students and Fine Art staff were invited to respond to the challenges that climate change brings and to submit a proposal for consideration for the opportunity to take part in the exhibition.

Untitled #1 (air) 2021

65 digital prints, pins, dimensions variable

I put forward a proposal that focused on the notion of ‘coming up’. My collection of resurfaced objects and fragments while gardening seemed in line with the themes of climate change. Highlighting the way we care for the planet, it draws attention to the carelessness of the throwaway and the unwanted. By rising up, the fragments are rejuvenated and fulfil a new purpose. Nonetheless it is an artificial stimulation where they are exulted beyond their function and potentially enter a position of hyperreality.
